Technology Company Leadership
The technology company experience behind ReasonedPath reaches back more than three decades. In 1989, Kent founded Customsoft, beginning a career that combined technology, product development, customer relationships, leadership, and the day-to-day realities of building and running a technology company.
Over the next 26 years, Customsoft designed and developed commercial software products, custom applications, web and e-commerce solutions, enterprise platforms, integration solutions, and hosted production systems across a variety of industries. The work required more than building technology. It meant understanding customers and their businesses, identifying the problems they were trying to solve, translating those needs into practical solutions, and delivering systems people could depend on.
Developing commercially viable products required deciding where to invest limited time and resources. Those years deepened Kent’s understanding of markets, timing, positioning, customer needs, and the difference between an interesting technology and a viable business opportunity. It created a practical understanding of product strategy grounded in making real decisions and adapting as markets and technologies changed.
Just as important was building and leading an organization: developing, mentoring, and motivating people; managing client relationships; creating partnerships; selling and delivering professional services; managing projects and finances; and responding to changing markets. Those responsibilities provided firsthand experience with many of the challenges technology companies encounter as they grow and mature.
Being a founder brought a different kind of responsibility. There is pride in building a company, developing people, creating products, and seeing customers succeed, but there is also the continuing responsibility to keep the business healthy and moving forward. Employees and their families depend on the decisions you make, customers depend on commitments being kept, and shareholders, when present, entrust you with protecting and building the value of their investment. As a company grows and evolves, the founder's role may need to evolve with it, creating decisions that can be both professionally complex and deeply personal. Living the founder's experience creates empathy and camaraderie with other founders and business leaders navigating those decisions.
Kent's later work inside state government added another perspective: becoming the customer. Leading government technology organizations provided firsthand insight into how public-sector leaders identify needs, establish priorities, evaluate products and vendors, navigate procurement, manage risk, and make investment decisions. The experience revealed where technology companies sometimes misunderstand government customers, and how stronger discovery, product strategy, communication, and delivery can help bridge that gap. Working within government budget constraints, and learning the processes required to expand those budgets, added a deeper understanding of government decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and how technology initiatives gain support and funding.
ReasonedPath brings those perspectives together today. We understand what it is like to build and lead a technology company, develop products and solutions, serve customers, make difficult business decisions, and navigate the unique responsibilities and challenges that come with being a founder. We understand how government customers think, operate, procure, and evaluate technology. That combination allows us to help technology and GovTech companies strengthen their products and strategies, better understand their government customers, navigate growth and change, and make well-reasoned decisions about the path forward.
